He was the driving force as well as inspiration to his son, Donald, throughout his son's High School and College years of playing Football. He was part of his son and friend's pit crew during the 80's at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough. George struck up a friendship with a young girl, in the early 90's who babysat his grandson, Kyle, her name, Sonia, who had invited and introduced George to her High School (BEHS) Field Hockey team and coaches, Faith Littlefield and Flossie Smith. George had a love for horses, dating back to his younger years, where he worked at a hotel during the summer months. He made the time, during his breaks, to exercise the horses at the hotel's riding stables. George spent a lot of time at Scarborough Downs and became close friends with two of the horse's owners, Elmer Ballard of Gorham, and Tom Minervino of So. Portland. He helped tend their horses each George Edward Durkin week, as well as many others. In 2007, he cut out some wooden plaques, routed the names of each horse and meticulously painted each one and hung them over the horse's stalls at the stables. His friends at the track had a great comradeship and shared many conversations and stories. His favorite horses were, 'Elgin' and 'Wind Swept'. One of George's lifelong dreams was to own and race his own horse. George was a member of the NRA & SAMS Alliance of Maine. Charles Robert Butler, a member of this post, who died on
Monday March 3rd, 2008 in Portland, ME.   A page shall be entered into the

The following was excerpted from the Portland Press Herald Notices.

Charles Butler, 78, a Mr. Fix-it with a soft spot for his family

By MELANIE CREAMER, News Assistant March 5, 2008

HOLLIS — Charles Butler used to stop by his nephew's business for an hour or so to talk or just watch him work.  "I liked having him there," said Glen Butler, who owns Auto Glass Plus in Hollis. "I knew it was good for him. It was part of his routine to go visiting. ... When I was busy, he wouldn't talk, and let me do my work. I might turn around and he would be gone."

Mr. Butler, who died Monday at age 78, was a retired construction worker with a knack for fixing engines. He worked for local contractors for about 30 years, doing projects throughout Maine and New Hampshire. His nephew said he built his homes in Hollis and Guilford, and was part of the crew that worked on the Cumberland County Civic Center.  "He liked working with his hands," his nephew said. "He had 'Yankee ingenuity,' as he called it. When he ran into a snag, he could figure out how to fix it."

Mr. Butler grew up in Hollis and entered the Navy in 1950. He re-enlisted after four years, then subsequently retired after more than 20 years of service. He was a boiler technician for most of his career and retired as a chief petty officer.  "He lived like a military man," said his great nephew, Benjamin Butler of Buxton. "He was very particular about his things. The tools in his garage were neat."

Mr. Butler was described by his family Tuesday as a good man with an interesting sense of humor. He had no children, but was close to his nieces and nephews, said Donna Shepard of Buxton.  "When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in Hollis with him," said Shepard, his niece. "My grandmother lived in the trailer next to his. He took care of her for quite a few years. We went over and hung out in his garage. He had a big old tricycle that was my grandmother's, and he let me ride it."

Mr. Butler enjoyed spending time at a camp on Davis Pond in Guilford.   While in the Navy, he frequently came "home" to the camp on weekends or leave from as far away as Norfolk, VA.  "It was a really a nice place to be. (He enjoyed) the serenity," Glen Butler said. "There was no traffic or phone. There were gas lights and a wood stove. It was just a very peaceful place to be. Most of us have been there at one time or another with him."

Uncle Charles Butler left an impression on his family. His nephew said he will miss his uncle's stories and his presence in their lives. "It was nice to hear him continually tell his story," his nephew said. "I don't think we listened as often as we could. There is a lot of wisdom in the older generation. ... I used to tell him I was sorry that I couldn't spend more time with him. I think he understood. We loved him."
